Striking distance.

Worked a full day onsite at Oddball on Wednesday, and with that, I'm officially done with my 135 hours. Nutty. We talked about me possibly coming back before the end of the semester to learn a few more things, about video in particular, but otherwise, it's all over except for the screaming (that is, the vast quantities of paperwork and report-writing I have to do for the "class" part of the class).

I did more film-splicing, starting off by compiling the leader and other bits that I'd put into many tiny rolls last week, looking like this...

...and instead made them look like this.

For the new batch is so often the case, the real effort is in actually finding the film in the fist place. For films that are already cataloged on reels in cans, of course, this often involves wrangling hairdryers. For the BANO footage, this time of the 1968 strike at San Francisco State, involves finding the specific reels in boxes. Like, for example, the box in far bottom corner of the shelf on the left.

And the next reel I had to find was in the box directly across from it, also requiring moving other boxes to get to it. When opened, the contents typically look like this...

...and because irony is the most plentiful element in the universe, the particular reel I was looking for was often very tiny, especially considering the effort that went into finding it.

For this box, I wasn't sure it was physically possible for me to access it in such a cramped space, but access it I did, though what I was looking for was at the very bottom, requiring putting most of the rest of the contents on whatever surface I could improvise. (Everything got put back in its proper place, of course.)

It's all excellent practice, though, since it's the nature of archives to have a lot of things in very small amount of space. And, most importantly, the mission was accomplished.

So, as I say, the bulk of the work-work is done. Semi-related, I just sent in my Candidacy Approval form today (a bit overdue, but my Faculty Advisor okayed it), meaning the ball is rolling toward me graduating next semester. And then the rest of my life.
